Management information system for draglines and dumpers used in mines

Mother nature has bestowed our country with quality mineral deposits and today we are mining 87 minerals to support the Indian economy which is expected to grow at plus 7 % rate. This growth rate requires 10 to 12 % growth in mining sector every year. (1). Achieving such voluminous growth is only possible by employing huge Heavy Earth Moving Machineries ( HEMM). Big size machines are extremely costly, one 24 cum dragline cost @250 crores and one 240 ton dumper Rs 24 crores (2). The idle time cost of such costly machines is very high. Hence it calls for an efficient management information system (MIS) for better availability and utilization of machines. ( 3 ) GPS based MIS are available but their capital and operational cost is high as it requires specialized manpower. This calls for indigenous development of economical sensor based MIS packages which could produce temper proof online data along with facilities of analysis.

A DC-DC converter using dickson charge pump voltage multiplier

The system is used to boost 20 V (from a solar cell or other sources) to 400 V. The converter is used to obtain 400 V which needs for integrating to 400V DC bus. Interleaved boost converters at the input side and Dickson charge pump based voltage multiplier at the output side are the main parts. Single source or two independent sources can be used. The modified Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier results in lower voltage stress on each capacitor for its voltage multiplier circuit and less number of diodes. Interleaved boost converter and Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier have been studied, designed and simulated. The design, open loop simulation and closed-loop simulation of the interleaved boost DC-DC converter based on modified Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier were done and compared with a conventional boost converter. The desired output voltage (400V) obtained. From the simulation results, it is evident that the output ripple voltage of the system with modification exhibits fewer ripples and it offers continuous input current than the conventional one. Also, the voltage across the capacitor is reduced and become uniform. Hence low rated capacitors with the reduced size are needed. The hardware part for the interleaved boost DC-DC converter based on modified Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier and conventional boost converter with Dickson charge pump voltage multiplier was done and desired output was obtained.

Design of a protected type flange coupling using Python

Couplings are elements used to connect two shafts during power transmission. Design of couplings plays a vital role in determining the power transmission capacity of the shaft at the rated rpm, which is very crucial. The design specification of coupling varies differently based on the requirements and involves a sequential design procedure which is tedious and time-consuming. This paper deals with developing a program code for the protected type flange coupling in an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language like “PYTHON”, which takes input (like required power input, no of rotations and desired factor of safety etc.) from designers, and then accordingly calculates the specifications of the coupling using design standard formulas and iterative procedures until the design meets the safe criteria. The final specifications are displayed along with the list of recommended materials for the coupling based on the design. The main objective of the paper is to write a generalized python program for the design of protected type flange couplings for any selected material considering all the design parameters. The activity tends to lead the manufacturing operations towards a more time-efficient, cost-effective and a more reliable and an optimised way of designing machine elements and aims to give better clarity to shopfloor workers .

Food spoilage decay monitoring using RF technology

Food industry has today become more oriented towards customer and requires quick response system. Electronic systems help in minimizing the unsafe production and distribution of food products. Currently the food labelling systems do not guarantee the good quality and safeness of the food. Hence, traceability is a tool applied to assist for assuring of food safety and its quality. We have used Active RFID system for the traceability, the communication protocol of Active RFID has been carefully designed. Energy efficient protocol has been developed and its aggregated throughput, delay and evaluation of the number of collisions happening in the radio channels is done and compared to the existing protocols, commercially available for Active RFID. In case of Marine food monitoring the TMA (trimethylamine) gas is liberated when the marine food starts to decay, using this liberated TMA gas as one of the parameters we determine freshness of food. In this paper it is also discussed about the designing and developing of the TMA (trimethylamine) sensor which can operate at normal room temperature.

A novel approach to improve the LZW data compression algorithm

The LZW data compression algorithm is a dictionary-based compression algorithm in which the process of searching for a pattern and its corresponding code to compress the data is a time-consuming process. As the file size to be compressed becomes larger the size of the dictionary also increases which increase the time to search a pattern in the dictionary. This paper proposes a novel approach to increase the efficiency of the algorithm with GPU using CUDA. Thus, making the process of searching the dictionary parallel. The result of the proposed system outlines the improved performance of the LZW algorithm

Adaptation of biomimicry in civil engineering

Biomimicry is a novel approach to developing design's and products to solve construction problems by taking inspiration from nature. It could offer a sustainable alternative solution to complex and conventional design in the best eco-friendly way. Biomimicry includes mimicking the shape, properties, methods, principles, and processes of nature. This paper reviews the existing biometric inspired civil engineering systems and architectures. In this paper various examples are taken from the nature and applied in design, like the regeneration process in lizard inspires the self-healing property of concrete, by mimicking termite mound, a passive cooling system could be developed, bridge design is one of the vital aspects of structures of biomimetics which is derived from the load carry process of trees. In a similar way, various other structures are being developed by getting inspiration from the creation of nature, as we move towards creating more sustainable construction and decreasing the carbon footprints in the infrastructure industry. Hence incorporating the potential of the mother earth will lead to the enhancement of structural stability and elegance. It will in turn preserve the earth in her best form.
