Optimal EEG Channels for emotion detection in humans

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a system that allows communication between a subject's brain and a computer, without requiring any physical movement. The high-level process for any BCI system is signal acquisition, signal processing and providing output through a physical device. Signal acquisition is done by sensors with multiple channels using invasive or non-invasive methods. The collected data usually contains more than 256 unique channels across the standard 32 sensors. In addition to this, the data is often sampled at a rate of 256Hz for long periods of time, resulting in massive datasets. The critical next step is to preprocess these signals to understand the patterns and changes in the various types of brain waves. However, the intrinsic neurophysiological changes in the brain pose a challenge to the processing of these signals. Identifying the key sensor channels becomes vital not only for the above reason but also due to the large size of the data points captured. This paper is a study on identification of optimal channels for the detection of an emotion such as Fear, one of the primary emotions frequently observed during multiple studies. By detecting channels with highly prevalent features, this study aims to reduce the size of data. The data so optimized can be output to speed up complex classification/prediction algorithms.

Pharmacogenomics in Cancer

The science of one’s genetic background and its impact on disease susceptibility and drug response has well established its place in clinics. As many drugs that are currently available in the market are “one size fits all,” but they don’t respond the same way for everyone. These inter-individual differences of drug response can be due to different age, drug-drug interaction, gender, inherited variations in drug disposition or through gene and drug target gene. The impact of Genetic study is mostly observed in the current arena of clinical oncology compared to any other chronic diseases due to several reasons: Toxicity, Critical time & narrow therapeutic index. “Pharmacogenomics” is the whole genome application of Pharmacogenetics, where genomic information is used to study the single gene interactions with drugs by studying the patient’s genetic profile. Their biomarkers hold great promise for the individualization in cancer therapy by selecting the most appropriate medication thereby, applying the optimal dose for each individual patient according to precise markers assisted in screening tests by reducing the toxicity of chemotherapy. Two major aspects considered by researchers while studying the response of a drug in an individual are: how much of a drug is needed to reach its target in the body, and how well the target cells or genes respond to the drug. Overall, the current review summarizes the role of Pharmacogenomics in cancers mainly focusing on Colorectal, Osteosarcoma & Breast Cancer and the advances made in their treatment.

Structural and Optical properties of Magnetism Oxide and Nickel doped Magnesium Oxide nanoparticles

In this study, un-doped and Ni-doped MgO nanoparticles have been synthesized, through a simple precipitation method. To investigate the effect of Ni-doping on the structure of MgO, the obtained nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Plate/slice-like morphology was clearly observed in the SEM micrographs. FTIR studies also frequency number 841.06 cm-1 appeared in the stretching vibration of metal oxides Mg-O. The irregular nano-sheets that are assembled together by weak interactions provide the plate-like morphology with an increase in unsaturated Ni atoms, oxygen vacancies, and defect sites which render the plate-like MgO more active for catalytic reactions.

Medication chatbot using conversational AI

Conversational Artificial Intelligence systems are computers that can be interacted with by just conversing with them. With the assistance of conversational AI, we can settle one of the significant challenges in this day and age i.e., Medicine non-compliance. It is tough for patients to keep track of their medications according to the prescribed dosage, time, frequency, and direction. This paper proposes a virtual assistant that uses conversational AI to remind people to take their pills/medications on time and in the correct dosage. As virtual assistants provide a steady stream of channels through which to enhance the healthcare infrastructure. The main goal is to help people improve their adherence to recommended health and wellness treatment. This will be extremely beneficial to persons who suffer from chronic illnesses.
