Abstract

Efficiency enhancement is the major concern for every system and various techniques have been used for achieving more efficiency and less fuel consumption. In IC engines chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy but less efficiently because most of the energy is dissipated as heat in the exhaust and coolant. Furthermore, the heat losses are 60-70% for internal combustion engines, it is important to recover that waste heat. There we have two solutions to this problem: 1) To make the IC engine very efficient so that it does not waste any energy and convert all the energy to useful work. 2) To utilize the waste heat energy for converting it into useful work. The first solution has some limitations in that not all the energy can be converted from one form to another without loss and the second solution can be achieved by converting heat energy directly into electrical energy with thermocouples/thermoelectric generators. In this project, the aim is to develop a system that can recover the waste heat lost in the engine to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
