Abstract
Consumers have long been regarded as the foundation of every market, with businesses producing goods and services to meet their needs and preferences. This traditional view gave consumers the status of the "king of the market." However, rapid industrialization, globalization, technological advancements, and the growth of digital commerce have significantly changed this relationship. Today, consumers face numerous challenges, including misleading advertisements, counterfeit products, online fraud, hidden charges, unfair trade practices, and misuse of personal data. These issues have increased consumer vulnerability and raised concerns about the effectiveness of existing consumer protection mechanisms. India has introduced several legal measures to safeguard consumer interests, most notably the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. While the legislation provides consumers with important rights and establishes mechanisms for grievance redressal, the increasing complexity of modern markets continues to pose new challenges. Many consumers remain unaware of their legal rights, and issues such as cyber fraud, deceptive online marketing, and delays in dispute resolution continue to affect consumer confidence. The present study aims to examine the changing position of consumers in the Indian marketplace by exploring the different forms of consumer exploitation and evaluating the effectiveness of consumer protection mechanisms. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted using a quantitative approach. Primary data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to consumers, while secondary data will be gathered from books, research articles, government reports, and relevant legal documents. The study is expected to assess consumer awareness regarding their rights, identify the major challenges faced by consumers in both traditional and digital markets, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing consumer protection systems. Based on the findings, the study will suggest practical recommendations to strengthen consumer awareness, improve the implementation of consumer protection laws, promote ethical business practices, and enhance consumer welfare. It is also expected to contribute to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the evolving consumer-market relationship in India.
