Abstract

Ever since independence, a number of innovative programs have been launched by the policymakers and practitioners for the upliftment of the deprived section. A huge amount of social and financial investment has been made to achieve the objective of employment generation and poverty eradication. But, the result seems to be far from satisfaction. Micro-finance through Self-help Groups (SHGs) has been considered as one of the most effective tools in the fight against poverty and improving the socio-economic status of rural poor especially the women. It has been accepted as a development instrument for the entire development process of a nation. Micro-finance and SHGs are effective in reducing poverty, empowering women, creating awareness and thereby ensuring the overall development of the nation.
