Abstract

The nasal consonant is produced when the velum is lowered and the air stream is allowed to flow out through the nose to produce [m] and [n].the present study investigated the acoustic characteristic of nasal consonants across two different rates of speech i.e. normal and fast rate in 19-25-year-old young adults. A total of 30 young adults participated in the study. These were native speakers of Malayalam with no history of speech, language and hearing problems. The subjects were asked to repeat back the words presented in normal and fast speaking rates. The responses were recorded using PRAAT software. The acoustic parameters including mean pitch, jitter, shimmer, SNR, and HNR were acoustically analyzed for the normal and fast rate of speech.
