Abstract

Multilevel converters have been widely used in high voltage high power and high-frequency applications. Plenty of multilevel topologies have been developed. Medium (MV) and high voltage (HV) high power DC-DC converters have been intensively investigated to be used in several applications such as large offshore farms and subsea compressors. Normal buck converters are not suitable for HVDC applications. Thus a non-isolated buck-type multi-level DC-DC converter is introduced. The main features of this topology are the low voltage across the semiconductors, low switching losses and reduced volume of the output filter. A phase shifted PWM control method is used to avoid capacitor voltage unbalance problems. The converter is simulated successfully using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The hardware is implemented and the experimental results are verified.
